Our Story

Updated: Jun 23, 2019

The origins of glassic date back to a warm December night in the island of Koh Samet, Thailand, where our Founder Patrick decided to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2014. Looking for the perfect celebration spot on a hidden beach, he and his friends glimpsed what it seemed to be heap of objects dragged by the tide. As they were getting closer, they realised that it was nothing but plastic trash intensively polluting the beach.

A threat to entire eco-systems

Thousands of plastic bottles and packages were drizzled to the drift, and they will remain there for the next 400 years, until they completely discompose. During this long lifetime they will have a terrible impact on thousands of ecosystems that are home of millions of spices, including us. Moved by the images he saw on Koh Samet, Patrick could not stay idle. It seemed obvious to him that the best way to stop plastic pollution in places where there is not a proper waste management, was by completely avoiding it… and this concept was the basis to build glassic, a project supported by Enactus Munich.

Every plastic product you have ever used will outlive you by at least 300 years

Nowadays, the images of those polluted beaches are resonating deep in our heads: they are our engine, our source of motivation. With passion and professionalism, the glassic team is becoming what we always wanted: an impactful social venture that provides sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging in the places where they are most needed.

Our first product: reusable glass bottles that will be filled with purified water from a local source and distributed to hotels and restaurants. Our first location: the Thai island of Koh Kood, where plastic pollution is revealed in every corner, and the lack of a proper recycling system makes natural ecosystems cry aloud for alternative products.

Our approach

Our way to solve this problem is the result of 3 years of the effort and the commitment of 15 students, who by traveling to the island have acquired a partnership with a local entrepreneur helping us with the production site, and future customers to who we want to guarantee the best quality of our product. And that is why our bottles and filters are provided by Ecopurewaters, a company that ensures the quality of the glass and optimal water purification.

Join our mission

But glassic will be more than a project reducing the number of plastic bottles down to 700,000/per year in Koh Kood. Our revenue will allow us to scale our business to other islands and extend our product portfolio. With the ultimate goal of raising awareness among the population, glassic aims to support educational programs in those vulnerable places, because we believe that individuals can make a difference with their choices.

Together we can end this crisis

In times of crisis, staying neutral means aggravating the situation. We definitely do not want a planet where within the next 30 years the number of plastics in the ocean will exceed the number of fishes. Now is the right time to take action, to keep the ocean alive and inspire others with our choices to change the course of Earth’s destiny. And you, on which side of the history do you want to be?
